World No Tobacco Day — May, 31th 2019

Май 31, 2019

The celebration of the World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) occurs every May 31st to raise awareness on the harmful and deadly effect of tobacco use and second-hand smoke exposure. The World Health Organization (WHO) and global partners mark the campaign every year since 1987.

According to WHO1, tobacco use kills more than 7 million people around the world each year, in other words, up to half of its users. More than 6 million of those deaths are the result of direct tobacco use while around 890 000 are the result of non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke.

The focus of the World No Tobacco Day 2019 is “Tobacco and lung health” drawing attention on the harmful effects of tobacco on lung health and the disease it may cause (cancer, chronic respiratory disease, etc.) and also reminding the importance of healthy lungs for the well-being of people:

1.Smoking is the main cause of lung cancer worldwide, responsible for more than 2/3 of lung cancer deaths.2

2.Smoking is the leading cause of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a condition that causes breathing to become painful and difficult.3

Furthermore, the campaign calls for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption
engaging stakeholders from multiple sectors in tobacco control. According to WHO, “In order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target of a one-third reduction in Non communicable diseases (NCD) premature mortality by 2030“4, international efforts must be made to instore tobacco control as a priority for governments and communities worldwide.
