Under temperate climates, asthma shows seasonality. It is in spring, when airborne pollen exposure increases, and in winter, where a greater use of asthma medication prescriptions and emergency department visits were documented. Additionally, higher risks of more severe airway hyper-responsiveness (AHR) were found in spring vs. summer (1).

The presence of allergens, but also bacteria or viruses and other environmental factors can interact with the sensitive airway epithelium and trigger inflammation.
