World Antimicrobial Awareness Week – November 18th to 24th 2020

Nov 20, 2020

Did you know that antimicrobial resistance is a major health concern?

World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW) is organized each year by the World Health Organization (WHO) from November 18th to 24th 2020. The aim of this week is to increase people awareness on global antimicrobial resistance and to encourage best practices among the general public, health workers and policy makers to avoid the further emergence and spread of drug-resistant infections.

Antimicrobial resistance is one of the biggest public health challenges of our time.

Antibiotic resistance happens when microorganisms like bacteria and fungi develop the ability to defeat the drugs designed to kill them. That means the microorganisms are not killed and continue to grow. They can become resistant to antibiotics either through mutation or by acquiring a resistance gene that confers resistance to one or more antibiotics.

The 2020 slogan is “Antimicrobials: handle with care”, with the topic “United to preserve antimicrobials” for the human sector.

A global action plan to tackle the growing problem of resistance to antibiotics and other antimicrobial medicines was endorsed at the Sixty-eighth World Health Assembly in May 2015. One of the key objectives of the plan is to improve awareness and understanding of antimicrobial resistance through effective communication, education and training.
